Most small businesses still don't own a website
Australia had 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at June 2026, and about 97% of them employ fewer than 20 people, according to the ABS Counts of Australian Businesses. Yet in the ABS's 2024-25 business survey, only 44.6% of businesses with up to four people had their own website or app. Among businesses with 5 to 19 people, it was 68.7% (ABS Characteristics of Australian Business).
Plenty of the rest rely on Facebook or Instagram: 51% of businesses in the same survey used social media for their online presence. That works until reach drops, the rules change or an account gets locked. A website is the one place online you control, and it's what your Google Business Profile points to when someone searches for what you do nearby.
And most of those searches happen on Google. The ACCC found Google handled nearly 94% of general search queries in Australia in August 2024, and the ACMA reported that 97% of adults went online on a mobile phone in 2025. A small business website has to read well on a phone first.
